Camping at Banks is a back-to-basics field behind a family house in the village of Banks, just a short walk from the Hadrian's Wall National Trail. It takes walkers and cyclists only; vehicles are not accepted. The ground is natural and suits small backpacking tents.
There are two compost toilets and three outdoor clay sinks with drinking water, but no shower and no electricity. The family sells soft drinks and a few camping basics, and will take baggage-transfer drop-offs. A woodburner-heated shepherd's hut sleeps up to three and comes with a bottom sheet, pillows and crockery.
For food, Lanercost has a cafe a mile away, Birdoswald fort's cafe is three miles east, and some takeaways in Brampton will deliver to the village.
