The Old Post Office Campsite

Small family campsite beside the River Irt at Santon Bridge, open all year, with tent pitches, electric tourers and serviced pitches.

  • Dogs welcome

This is a small, long-running site beside the River Irt at Santon Bridge, on the quiet western side of the Lake District near Wasdale. The family has run it since 1951. Tents go on non-electric grass pitches, while touring caravans, campervans and motorhomes use electric pitches on grass and gravel, with a handful of fully serviced hardstanding pitches that have their own water and drainage. Some pitches are on the river bank and children can paddle, swim and, subject to the water level, fish in the river with a rod licence.

Facilities are plain: coin-operated hot showers, laundry, a covered washing-up area, drinking water taps, a chemical and grey-waste point and free wifi. A farm and gift shop in Santon Bridge is ten minutes on foot. The site aims at couples and families, so stag and hen parties, single-sex groups and parties of two or more units are not accepted. Dogs are welcome on leads, up to three per pitch. Open fires are banned, but raised barbecues are fine.
