Church Stile sits on a working Herdwick sheep farm at the edge of Nether Wasdale, with the Screes rising above Wastwater about a mile away. The camping ground is about seven acres of level grass dotted with planted trees, with around 70 tent pitches, 30 of them with electric hook-up, and hardstanding for motorhomes and campervans. Oak woodland with paths runs alongside, and there is a play area, a ball-games field and a small farm shop with wifi.

Not everyone camps. Two shepherd's huts with wood burners, three insulated camping pods and five static caravans are let by the night, short break or week, and the caravans run to early November. The site mostly takes families, couples and walkers and is strict on groups: two families or six adults at most per booking, with larger parties arranged by phone. Showers are free, and there is a laundry room, an ice-block freezer and fire pits to hire, with wood sold on site.
