Gill Head is a family-run hill farm at Troutbeck, near Penruddock, looking up to Blencathra and the northern fells. Ullswater is about five miles away and Keswick a short drive.

The campsite is level and sheltered, with grass and hardstanding pitches, most with electric hook-up. There are ten timber camping pods that work like a tent that is already up (bring your own bedding and kit), a communal cabin with a TV and kettle, a small shop with milk, bread and eggs, and fire pits you can hire.

It is a working farm, so dogs stay on leads at all times, and the site is quiet: separately-made bookings that turn out to be a group are refused. Open Easter to the end of October. The farmhouse (sleeps 8) and a ground-floor apartment (sleeps 2) can be rented too.
