Cross Dormont Camp Site

Basic, family-run field camping on a hill farm above the southern shore of Ullswater, at a flat £25 a night, tents and motorhomes only.

See all 5 photos
  • Dogs welcome

Cross Dormont is a working hill farm at Howtown, with the camping fields running down towards the south end of Ullswater. It is back-to-basics camping for tents and motorhomes (no caravans), and the owners say the nightly rate does not change through the year. Most of the season you pitch in the main field, which the farm may only open for 60 days a year, so it is bookable on a published list of dates, mostly summer weekends and the long stretch from late July to early September. A smaller sloping grass area is available from 1 April to 31 October for dates outside that list.

There are hot electric showers, a dog-friendly policy (on leads) and no campfires, though raised barbecues are fine. Pooley Bridge, with shops, cafes and pubs, is about a mile and a quarter away and has a regular bus. Noise after 11pm gets people asked to leave, and the site is aimed at families and walkers rather than parties.
