Ruby Country Camping is a five-acre meadow just off the A3072 near Hatherleigh, run by Marc and Dinah. There are seven mown pitches for tents and small campervans, each with its own fire pit and grill, and the rest of the field is left to grow wild. Cars park at the edge of the meadow, with trolleys and wheelbarrows for kit.

Besides your own tent you can hire a ready-made bell tent, or step up to a fully fitted yurt or Lotus Belle (towels are the only thing to bring). Showers are hot and free, with eco soaps because shower and toilet water goes through a solar-powered bio-digester. There are flushing toilets and a compost loo, but no electric hook-ups, no wifi and no hardstanding. Down by the stream there is a play area with badminton, croquet, boules and archery, and wood-fired pizzas can be ordered a day ahead. The whole site can be hired for groups of up to 50.
