Balloch O' Dee is a traditional campsite near Kirkcowan, on the edge of Galloway Forest Park and its dark skies. Tents, campervans, motorhomes and caravans share one large grass field with no marked pitches, so you pitch where you like, and there are stone fire pits around the field with firewood for sale. Three hardstanding and three grass pitches with hook-up, for vans only, sit in the next field.

The hosts keep free-range animals that wander through the site, and they ask for quiet: no amplified music, though live instruments are fine. A cookhouse with a log-burning range and a large covered shelter with sofas give everyone somewhere dry to cook and sit.

Beyond the field there are a few unusual places to sleep: a Mongolian yurt, a round house and a hand-built vintage-style caravan (both off-grid), a lodge, and two converted cow sheds called the Bothy and the Ranch House. Most have log burners, and dogs are welcome.
