Chesters is the Scottish Borders outpost of Feather Down: four canvas hideaways in woodland and fields on the banks of the River Teviot, just outside Jedburgh. Each one is a tented cottage with a wood-burning stove, a private shower and no mains electricity. Wood for the stove (one pack a day) and a welcome pack with bed linen, towels, candles and basics are included.
The grounds centre on an old walled garden where guests can pick fruit and vegetables to cook, and there are dens to build, a treehouse and river to play in, and fishing. Every hideaway has a Discovery Tent with books, paints, camp beds, a microscope and a telescope, and a hot tub can be added to any of them. A small honesty shop in the bothy sells essentials and local goods.
Dogs are welcome. Osprey nest in a tree nearby from May to September, and the Borders Railway from Tweedbank reaches Edinburgh. Kielder, Jedburgh Abbey and Harestanes visitor centre are a short drive away.
