Strawfields is a family farm in the countryside behind Ilfracombe, a short drive from the surf beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton. The campsite is deliberately tiny and car free. You park at the gate and wheel your kit across to one of six tent pitches in Poppy Patch, or to the Twitty Song Meadow, which has two large pitches and two deluxe ones with a covered kitchen, sofa, table and hammock already set up. There is no electric hook-up. A wooden shower block has free hot showers and flushing toilets, taps are drinking water, and an ice pack freezer is kept in the barn.

Away from the field the farm lets four shepherd's huts and cabins, each with a wood burner and its own hot shower, and three 16th-century cottages. Guests can join the morning animal rounds to feed the alpacas, pygmy goats and miniature ponies, and in school holidays there is a Saturday pizza night. No dogs are allowed on the campsite or in the huts (they are welcome in the cottages), campervans cannot stay overnight, and group bookings are refused.
