Petruth Paddocks is a big, easy-going campsite on the southern edge of Cheddar, under the Mendip Hills, run by the same family since 2003. It is split into six fields so the site can keep the peace: a family field, a chill-out field for larger groups, a barn field with a child-free quiet area, a stable field for couples and singles, a field for adult groups and a separate glamping field. Pitching is informal on the grass; there are also ten hardstandings with hook-up, water and grey-water disposal for caravans and motorhomes.

For something already set up there are three hand-built shepherd's huts, three gypsy bowtop wagons, a powered 6m bell tent, a full-size American school bus and a land-based Yellow Submarine, and a wood-fired hot tub can be added to a pitch. Facilities include 28 toilet cubicles, 18 showers, 10 washing-up bays, a recycling point, a play area and food on site such as coffee, pizza and breakfast rolls. Music has to stop by 10pm in the family field and 11pm in the chill-out field.

  • Six separate fields from family to adult groups
  • Ten hardstandings with hook-up, water and waste
  • Shepherd's huts, bowtops, a school bus and a submarine to stay in
  • Wood-fired hot tub you can add to any pitch
  • Food on site and a play area in the family field
