Ridgeway View is a no-frills field on a family farm just off the Ridgeway, under half an hour from Oxford and Reading. You pick your own pitch once you have texted the number on the noticeboard, and pitches are big, about 9m by 12m, with space for a car and two or three tents. Light pollution is low, so it is a good place for stargazing.

Facilities are deliberately basic: portaloos, cold-water showers and three drinking-water taps, two with sinks for washing up. Raised barbecues and campfires are allowed, with fire kits to hire and logs to buy. Campervans are welcome but there is no electric hook-up or waste disposal. The Ridgeway and Thames Path are both close, and the King William IV pub at Hailey is a 40-minute walk or a five-minute drive. Everything must be booked in advance.
