Castlewellan Forest Park Caravan & Campsite

Council-run campsite inside a forest park in the Mournes: 37 electric hardstandings, 40 grass tent pitches and a no-hook-up field, beside the lake and arboretum.

The campsite sits inside Castlewellan Forest Park, a 460-hectare estate with a lake, an arboretum, a hedge maze and 27km of mountain-bike trails, at the foot of the Mourne Mountains. It is run by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council. There is a main site of 37 hardstanding pitches with electric hook-ups, a separate area of 40 grass pitches for small tents, and Drumbuck Wood, a 19-pitch field for self-contained motorhomes and caravans with no power or toilets.

Bookings are online only and paid in full up front. The campsite opens daily from early April to the end of September, then only on selected days in March and October, and closes in November. Open fires and fire pits are banned, generators are not allowed and dogs must stay on a lead. Building work on a new visitor centre and cafe has been going on in the park, so expect some daytime noise.
