Foxholes is four open grass fields above Bishop's Castle with views to Corndon Hill, the Stiperstones and the Long Mynd. There are no marked pitches: you pick your spot on arrival. The top tent field and the yurt field take tents and small VW-sized campervans, the touring field takes everything, and the half-acre field is kept for bigger motorhomes and caravans and has four coin-metered hook-ups.

Charging is per person rather than per pitch, so awnings, extra tents and extra cars cost nothing. The solar-powered shower block, rainwater-flushed loos and a common room with sinks, a shared fridge-freezer and a book swap keep things simple; there is no shop, bar or wifi, and the town's Co-op and pubs are a short walk along the footpath. Campfires are allowed in hired fire drums, and the lack of lighting makes for good stargazing.

If you would rather not bring a tent, the site also lets two wood-clad cabins, three converted railway carriages, three camping pods and a bunkhouse sleeper carriage.

  • Walk to Bishop's Castle along the Shropshire Way in about ten minutes

  • Hired fire drums and logs for campfires
  • Converted railway carriages and camping pods
  • Dark skies, with the Milky Way visible on clear nights
