Coast & Castles started as a pop-up on a former RAF base a mile from the fishing village of Boulmer and has grown steadily since. Grass pitches are spread over three areas: one for families, a quieter adults-only one and a smaller tent field. There are flat, free-draining pitches for campervans, motorhomes and tourers, some on hardstanding with 6 amp hook-ups run from the site's own solar system.
For something with a roof there are bell tents, timber pods with their own toilet, a woodland bell tent and a shipping-container hideaway for two. The Gin Tin bar opens from 5pm and anyone can drop in, and wood-fired pizza comes out at weekends and in school holidays. The hook-ups switch off overnight, so it suits fridges and phone charging rather than kettles and heaters. Alnwick is about four miles away.
