Woodfire began here in 2018, on one open paddock on a former stud farm south of Petworth, with views over the wooded South Downs and a footpath straight from the field. The idea is gastro camping: the owners cook over fire in a timber camp kitchen, run a small bar and send out a menu the week you arrive, so you can book dinner on the nights you want it.
You pitch where you like in the field and park in the car park next to it, then wheelbarrow your kit over (a car can come onto the field if you have a mobility problem and arrange it first). There is space for up to five campervans, but no caravans. If you would rather not bring a tent, 5m canvas touareg tents sleep up to six with airbeds, a table and benches.
Showers are hot and roomy, toilets are compost loos, and the washing-up area is covered. There is no lighting on site because the area is a dark sky reserve. Fires on the ground are not allowed, but you can bring a fire pit or hire one. Four pubs are within walking distance, and the village shop at Graffham is half an hour on foot.
